Moonlight Lantern (2019)
The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional celebration in China. It is customary for families to gather and eat mooncakes while enjoying the full moon. In 2015, I made rabbit mooncakes, and four years after—I decided to make some more special designs.
In a Chinese legend about rabbits, The moon was called the Jade Rabbit; therefore, some people in China refer to the Mid-Autumn Festival as the Rabbit Festival and they believe that rabbits return to the moon when they pass away. This legend was my inspiration for creating rabbit lanterns out of non-woven fabric. Each side of the lantern has a rabbit pattern; when the lantern rotates, a running rabbit can be seen. It is unknown where it will run to—it could be to the moon or to someone it cares about.
